Why you should attend

The Western New York Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will host, in Rochester, one of 250 “Out of the Darkness Community Walks” nationwide. Raising millions of dollars for suicide prevention programs and research, these walks are also about raising awareness, building hope, and shedding light on the topic of suicide, which is often kept in the darkness.

Three event highlights

1 - A collection of Lifekeeper Memory Quilts will be on display at various locations, including high schools, to help bring awareness of suicide, remove the stigma associated with it, and put a human face on the tragedy of suicide.   Each square is provided by a survivor of suicide loss, and there are numerous quilts spanning several years.

2 - Participants in the community walk may have struggled personally with mental illness or suicide, may be supporting a friend or family member, or may be walking in memory of a loved one lost to suicide. The names of loved ones who ended their lives in this tragic manner will be read aloud, according to survivors’ wishes.

3 - The American Foundation of Suicide Prevention funds research that is aimed at helping people understand and prevent suicide, recognize warning signs, and understand the psychiatric illnesses that can lead to suicide.
