The Mott family was well-prepared for “Talk Like a Pirate Day” at Victor Free Library. All they had to do was unpack their collection of jewels, capes, eye patches, pirate hats and bandanas, and they were good to go.
“We have one who loves pirates,” said Farmington mom of four, Theresa Nash. “For his fifth birthday we had a pirate party, and we’ve been pirates for Halloween. So we have a little chest that I made for his party and we just took all of this stuff out of it.”
The library’s special family story time on Sept. 19 was the brainchild of Youth Services Specialist, Lynne Madden.
“I’ve been a fan of ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day’ (for a long time),” said Lynne Madden. “My niece introduced me to it. I just love it! I love pirates, I love talking like a pirate, and the books are so much fun.”
Madden read some of her favorites aloud, including “Pirate Pete’s Talk Like a Pirate” by Kim and Doug Kennedy, and “Roger the Jolly Pirate” by Brett Helouist. Families also sang pirate songs and worked together on crafts.
Pete Mott was dressed to impress in head-to-toe pirate regalia.
“(My wife) asked me if I wanted to look in the mirror before we left,” he said, “and I told her ‘there really isn’t a need.’”
His 7-year-old daughter, Amanda, believes men make better pirates, because “they talk more like a pirate.”
Madden sang and taught “A Children's Pirate Shanty” by Mark “Cap’n Slappy” Summers to those at the event. Together they sang “I’m a pirate, that I be; I sail me ship across the sea; I stay up late ‘till half past three; and that’s a peg below my knee.”
Another story time, this one focused on Halloween, is planned for the end of October. For more information contact lmadden@pls-net.org or find Victor Free Library on Facebook or visit victorfreelibrary.blogspot.com.
