CHALLENGER - Michael Young
DISTRICT RESIDENT: 18 years
EDUCATION: Associate in Science, Bachelor of Science, Doctor of Chiropractic
PROFESSION: Doctor of Chiropractic in private practice with an office in Canandaigua also clinic manager of The Body Mind Center of Integrative Medicine at Thompson Health Systems
YEARS ON THE BOARD: New candidate

Why are you running for the school board and is your unique contribution to the Victor school district?
I’m running for school board because I have lived in the district and my children have benefitted from the past school boards great planning and I would like to give back to the community with this. I also feel that I would have a lot to offer the community in this position, foresight and a history of business fiscal responsibility. I think I also have the ability to create consensus where it is needed.

How would you characterize the budget challenge faced by VCS currently and what is your outlook for 2010-2013?
I think the budget challenge that we will face is significant however not insurmountable. There will be issues at the state level that will trickle down to the district level. I think we as a district need to continue proper planning for the shortcomings of the state budget. Keeping the level of services for the students is also a must and I think it can be done.

What do you see as the greatest strength of Victor Central Schools?
I think the one of the greatest strengths of the school district is the group of teachers and staff that has been carefully assembled. Not only are the students well served by this group but the district as a whole has also seen the rewards of having this group. We also live in a community that is very active in the district and volunteers are abundant. The combination of these 2 groups has made Victor a destination area for many new families.

What do you see as the area most in need of improvement?
There will always be a need to continually improve in the budget area. You are only as good as your last budget. While this has always been a strength in Victor, there is always a need to be vigilant.

If you could accomplish one thing done in your tenure on the Board of Education, what would it be and why?
I would like to look back at my tenure and see that an organization that I was involved in had a positive impact on the community. That the students in the district had access to the tools needed to make them successful in life.

How would you propose dealing with the increased number of special needs children in the district?
I think that this is another issue to factor into any future planning for the district. I don’t think that Victor is alone in this increase and I think that this is just one more reason to elect a board that has the leadership ability necessary to handle these upcoming challenges.
