Why are you running for the school board and is your unique contribution to the Victor school district?
I am a product of the Victor schools and I moved my family to Victor 5 years ago so my daughter could have the same benefit of this great school. I ran for the board 2 years ago to give back to the school that has served me so well and also because my daughter has not always had the same experience. I believe I have contributed positively to the board during my tenure in which we have hired a new superintendent and faced financial difficulties for the first time in many years. I would like to continue in guiding the district through these difficult financial times while ensuring we maintain our high programming standards.
How would you characterize the budget challenge faced by VCS currently and what is your outlook for 2010-2013?
The budget challenge currently facing the district is critical. The district's conservative approach is helping us right now but I think we have more difficult times ahead. We have to balance our growing student population and high quality programs against decreasing financial resources. Just as the school is facing difficult financial issues, so too are many families in the district and we cannot add to their burden to meet any shortfalls.
What do you see as the greatest strength of Victor Central Schools?
The greatest strength of Victor is the kids. They are the focus of everything we on the board do. They rise to our high expectations and, more often than not, surpass them. They make it easy for our teachers and staff to love what they do. The kids are a testament to the quality of our community.
What do you see as the area most in need of improvement?
There is no end in sight to the growth of the district. We have to continually evaluate and improve our efforts to handle this growth in light of financial constraints, space limitations, and high programming expectations. We have to ensure our teachers have adequate resources to do what we ask of them and to not overburden them so teaching quality suffers. We must be proactive and creative in meeting the challenges we face as the result of being a destination district.

If you could accomplish one thing done in your tenure on the Board of Education, what would it be and why?
We can have the best programs, the highest quality of everything, be recognized as one of the best, but the true test of our success is what people think of our students at the next level. Whether students are going on to college, the military, work, or wherever their path takes them, we have to ensure we prepare them for their next steps. We need to market the district and students at the college level to maximize opportunities available to our students.
How would you propose dealing with the increased number of special needs children in the district?
Because of the many mandates serving the interests of students with special needs, families can find comfort that those services are secure, even in difficult financial times. If the needs of students increase, the district will meet those needs. Our director of pupil personnel services and her staff are well-versed in how to maximize resources available to all students. The current board evaluates all of our decisions with the guiding principle of "how does this impact our students and what is best for them."
