Grilling hot dogs, larger-than-life fireman’s helmets and turn out gear, glistening chrome, and towering fire trucks gleaming from stem to stern — it was a great day for young and old to think about fire safety, and about the firefighters who risk their lives to protect us. Both Farmington and Victor Fire Departments hosted open houses recently at their respective stations to spotlight fire prevention week. Saturday, Oct. 15, was wet and drizzly, but that didn’t stop residents from enjoying both events, which featured free Frisbees and balloons, fire safety education, a jaws of life demonstration, Operation Safe Child fingerprinting and photo IDs, blood pressure screenings, K-9 demos, child safety seat checks, a Mercy Flight landing and free donuts, cider, hot dogs, soft drinks and popcorn. Victor Fire Department also hosted a chicken barbecue. And yes. Everyone who wanted one, got their very own firefighter’s helmet to wear home.
