LETTER: Community came through in a big way for struggling families

For 17 years I have asked the residents of Irondequoit to reach into their hearts and help other Irondequoit residents have a nice Christmas. We have worked hard to make sure that every child (that we know of) receives a gift on Christmas morning. We have worked hard to help families who struggle during winter recess by providing extra food. We have worked hard to provide a little warmth and love to our seniors or veterans that are alone or who have been struggling this year. Every year you have come through to “help us help others,” but this year you have totally outdone yourselves!

We are so fortunate to live in a community that cares like ours. This year you adopted 128 households and provided toys, books, warm clothing, pajamas, hats and gloves, food baskets and holiday meal baskets. You provided enough gifts that even after our distribution day we continued to provide holiday gifts and food for additional families, bringing our total to 267 households!

You have come through bigger than I have seen in all of the years we have been doing this. You have amazed me to tears and I am so proud to live in Irondequoit where people are so concerned about their fellow neighbors. This year every school in Irondequoit participated in some way, whether it was an adoption of a family, a food or hat and mitten drive, a monetary donation or gift cards. Many school clubs gave generously as well, again from food drives or gift bags with gift cards, books and gloves in them.

The churches in our community are second to none, and I cannot think of a church that didn’t
donate in some way for the holidays. Small business and large made donations as did social and civic groups. And residents, what can I say about the residents in our community. We are STILL receiving much needed donations to help through the year. Residents showed up at ICC to make all kinds of donations; a little boy who broke open his piggy bank and gave us what was in it (matched by his parents) to the people who came in with a turkey or can of coffee all the way up to the residents who also sponsored entire families and made very large purchases or donations to us. You all know who you are, and there are too many to name here but I have been so touched by all of you. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I do not know what 2012 will bring, hopefully some relief for struggling households but if there is still a need, any need, I know that you will continue to be a warm, compassionate, caring and sharing community!

Love and Peace to all for a joyous holiday season and a happy, healthy New Year!
