Voters beware: As Election Day draws nearer, television viewers will be bombarded with political advertisements from presidential, congressional and state legislative candidates — many of them quite negative in tone.

Political strategists and marketers think that negativity, half truths and deceptions win elections. They’re banking that voters can be fooled.

Don't be fooled again.

Haven’t we had enough of the negativity, gridlock and political gamesmanship — by both Republicans and Democrats — in which important issues are left unresolved?

It’s time for voters to send a message: Enough is enough.

We need to begin to take steps to fix the political mess we're in.

We need candidates with integrity and concrete proposals.

Voters should think twice about voting for a candidate who conducts a campaign that focuses mainly on why the opponent is so bad.

Voters also need to think twice about voting for a candidate beholden to special interest groups. The airwaves are filled with nasty ads by political action committees, special interest groups with deep pockets and their own political agendas. Voters should be very skeptical of the message of special interest groups.

Sound bites that say the candidate favors lower taxes and less government sound great. But how will the candidate achieve it?

There are no simple answers to the many critical issues facing the state and nation: Creating jobs, cutting the deficit, improving the education system, guarding against terrorism, overcoming hunger and poverty, protecting the environment, developing new energy sources, rebuilding our roads and bridges, resolving the immigration issue, among others.

Voters need to be smart and do their homework to make informed choices and not be suckered by political strategists and marketers who think negativity, deception and big money win elections.
