I have to admit that I was skeptical when I first saw a pink garbage tote on the curb.
Upon reading about Lilac Disposal’s campaign to provide these pink totes to customers for a donation, which they in turn will donate to the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester, I was thrilled!
The Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester is the only full-scope, independently operated organization focused specifically on breast cancer in the Greater Rochester Region. The Coalition is a not–for-profit, local grassroots organization dedicated to eradicating breast cancer through action and advocacy. Their mission is to provide support to those touched by a diagnosis of breast cancer, to make access to information and care a priority through education and advocacy, and to empower women and men to participate fully in decisions relating to breast cancer. A visit to 840 University Ave. will reveal all that the Coalition offers. Every dollar donated stays in the Rochester area.
October, Breast Cancer Awareness month is just around the corner and we will witness a sea of pink along with the beautiful autumn colors.
Most consumers have the best of intentions when they purchase items that are promised to support the fight against breast cancer — buyer beware! Educate yourself and ask questions: Which organization benefits from the sale, how much of the sale is actually donated, and how does that group spend the money?
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Karen Gutzmer and applaud her “local supporting local” generosity.
