With the news that Monroe County sales tax revenue is increasing, school districts will probably be receiving more of this revenue than was projected during the annual budget vote in May. Since they now won’t need as much in local property tax revenue, they should set their respective tax levies at a lower level.

District Boards of Education, not the voters, will be voting on this item in upcoming meetings over the next month or so. They should tell their constituents, “We thought we would need x dollars from you; but we now find that we will only need a lesser amount. So, we are not going to take the higher amount from you.” That would certainly engender a lot of good will.

I hope such board deliberations on this issue are undertaken in a transparent, full-disclosure manner, where the amount of additional unexpected revenue and the actual change in total assessed valuation are made public.
