The town of Irondequoit and Monroe County are responsible for the health and safety of its residents. The exploding overpopulation of deer in Irondequoit presents a genuine public health crisis. Not only the increased number of deer-car accidents, but also the threat of Lyme disease are direct assaults on our public welfare. The Monroe County Health Department has reported at least one confirmed case of Lyme disease in Irondequoit every year since 2008.
The town and county must reinstate the past successful “bait and shoot” program as an economical and effective means to reducing the deer population. In public health, prevention is cheaper than treatment.
