TJ Graham is a huge believer in the phrase “Size Doesn’t Matter.”

“I don’t consider myself short, I feel like I am above average,” the 6-foot, 180-pound Buffalo Bills rookie wide receiver said following Wednesday’s practice at St. John Fisher. “I look at myself as bigger than the average person. I feel good about myself, I don’t look at it as a bad thing.”

Graham may not have the size to win the battle for a jump ball in the red zone. Thanks to a 4.41 40-yard dash time the former NC State standout shouldn’t have any trouble scoring touchdowns.

Graham has played well in his first training camp, earning reps with the first team. He appears eager to earn the second starting receiver spot.

“If he gets open it is hard to catch him,” said Chan Gailey, Buffalo head coach, said about the team’s third round draft pick in last April’s NFL Draft. “He got open and he is catching the ball very well right now. He has still got a lot to learn, but he is doing some good things out there.”

Graham admitted a lack of knowledge on the playbook held him back during the OTAs. How did he respond? By spending most of his free time with his head in the playbook hoping to be up to speed for training camp.

“His progress is not just the mental side of it,” said Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bills quarterback.

“I think he is learning how to be a receiver. I think OTAs and mini-camp were so helpful for him. Just to get out there and figure out how to run routes, and how to figure out the timing with the quarterback and those different things. He has done a nice job and he just needs to continue to get better.”

Graham gives a Buffalo a unique weapon in an offense that already features plenty of height including 6-foot-7 tight end Scott Chandler and 6-foot-5 receiver David Nelson. Graham’s speed was on display during Sunday’s practice when he made a leaping grab on the back shoulder during on a 30-yard pass play down the sidelines.

“Run fast and catch the ball,” Graham said when asked about his role on the team. “So I have been trying to do that the best I can. I am trying to learn the playbook so I can run as fast as I can and make the plays for the team.”

Graham comes to Buffalo following a career as one of the Wolfpack’s most versatile weapons. He finished with 3,299 all-purpose yards at NC State.

Graham was utilized more in the return game in his first three seasons with the Wolfpack, but emerged as a receiving threat in his final year. He finished with 46 receptions for 757 yards and seven touchdowns last fall.

“I loved it there,” Graham said. “The best thing that ever happened to me was going to NC State. I didn’t understand football as much as I could but coming out of it I really learned a lot there. I appreciate the time I had there.”
