The beer-enhancing product now is being sold at two Ontario County retailers

SOUTH BRISTOL – Mad Hops Flavored Brew Drops — a product that transforms the taste, color and aroma of regular, everyday beer — is making its way into Christmas stockings.

The product launched earlier this year by founder Peter Hanley of South Bristol is making a splash in sales after recently hitting the shelves at two local retailers, according to the company. With its hop yard in South Bristol and initial test launch in the Buffalo area, MapHops is now sold in Ontario County at Mixers and More in Farmington and Lake Street Station Winery in Geneva, as well as several retail outlets in Buffalo.

“It’s really surprising,” said Hanley, who not long ago gave up the corporate world to return to his roots and branch out. He started up a hopyard at his family home on County Road 12. With designs of becoming a craft beer maker, he got sidetracked into making ordinary beer taste like a craft brew.

“I have watched people try Mad Hops at festivals and tastings around the country this year, and I’ve seen people move from puzzled to skeptical to delighted in the time it takes to pour and taste the product,” he said. “Mad Hops is for people on a beer budget and for people who, frankly, don’t like the taste of beer.”

Made from genuine beer ingredients like hop oils, bittering and malts, a squirt of Mad Hops elevates the base flavor of a beer, then adds fruit and other natural flavorings. The product launched with six varieties: Pale Ale; Irish Porter; Wild Blueberry; Cherry Wheat; Apple Amber; and Mexican Lime, with more varieties on the way. One bottle sells online for $7.99 and flavors up to 18 beers.

Mad Hops is currently being produced by a co-packer partner with plans to consolidate production and supply in the Finger Lakes region in 2017. Three local employees currently manage operations and marketing, with a number of part-time event staff for festivals and in-store tastings, according to a Mad MHops release.
