Phew! Now that was a close one.
For one more week, at the very least, I can still call myself Palmyra-Macedon’s school-record-holder in the 45-meter dash. But I expect how senior Seth Bailey has been sizzling the oval as of late, I can kiss that puppy good-bye after the current 55- and 300-meter dash record holder takes another whack at Section 5’s shortest sprint.
Last weekend at the New York Chiropractic College, Bailey clocked-in at 5.85 seconds — just one one-hundredth of a second shy from tying my record. And just how close is 0.01 of a second, you might wonder? The difference is 0.08 meters, which is 3.14 inches. Frankly, only the sharpest of human eye’s could detect the winner in photo-finish-type race. Nevertheless, it is the second-quickest time registered in school history, and the fastest by a Pal-Mac sprinter in a decade.
Needless to say, Bailey’s effort garnered a first-place finish last weekend, and he joined several other local athletes to bring tally gold-medal finishes on the third-to-last regular season outing before sectional competition begins inside the hallowed walls of Gordon Field House Feb. 18.
Marion jumping sensation Mackenzie Sturtz, a junior, cleared 5-foot even to secure a first-place finish over teammate and senior Emily Higgins, who soared to a best 4-10 effort. Sturtz and Higgins are one of the best one-two punches in all of Section 5 high jumping, just like Bailey and sprint counterpart Allison Phillips, who clocked the fastest 45-meter dash time in all of Section 5 this season.
Carving out another piece of an astounding rookie campaign on the indoor circuit, Phillips, a junior, scorched the straightaway to tie Emily Bush as the second-quickest sprinter in Red Raider history. Phillips’ awesome effort of 6.44 came just short of the seven-year-old school record of 6.38 held by Nicole Nolan.
Dominating the circle all season, Newark’s Kendra Bush once again registered a first-place finish in the shot put with a 33’ 4.5” effort, which beat-out runner-up Sam Turner, a Red Jacket senior, who hurled the orb 32’ 10.5”.
Keeping his winning ways alive, Cody Engelsen again laid the foundation in the 600-meter run, tallying another first-place with a time of 1 minute and 32.86 seconds. The Marion senior bested teammate Brandon VanderBrook, a junior, who finished third in 1:34.26.
It’ll be a varsity only competition this weekend, and the rest of the season for that matter, so expect competition to get much more serious. And while we await the postseason, if you feel a certain athlete, coach or team has garnered the right to be featured in the newspaper, please shoot me an email at: denright@messengerpostmedia.com.
