The Ontario County Board of Supervisors approved the resignation of county Planning Director Kris Hughes at its board meeting Thursday night, effective immediately. Hughes, who had been planning director since 2002, was not at the meeting, which involved a closed-door session before the board signed off on the resignation.

Supervisors would not comment on details of the resignation agreement, though Geneva Supervisor Donald Ninestine indicated there were long-standing tensions. Ninestine voted "no" on the resolution the board approved, which said Hughes had “voluntarily continued in the office as a holdover following expiration of his latest term.”

Ontario County Administrator John Garvey said after the meeting that Hughes had not been reappointed when his term expired this past February. “I didn’t like the settlement,” Ninestine said after the meeting. When asked what he thought of Hughes in the job, Ninestine said, “I think he left a lot to be desired.”

“He didn’t get jobs completed,” added Ninestine, citing an example of the long, drawn-out process of upgrading the county’s radio communication towers. “That dragged on for over six years.”

During the meeting, at the time of the vote, Canandaigua City Supervisor David Baker said Hughes had done a good job helping in matters dealing with the Ontario County landfill.

Hughes had earned a salary of $96,665.

Deputy County Administrator Darlys McDonough will temporarily assume the duties of planning director until the position is filled, Garvey said.
