Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, Lynne Erdle, was appointed interim superintendent of schools by the Canandaigua City School District Board of Education Thursday night during a Board Meeting.
Erdle will replace Donald Raw Jr., who resigned suddenly Aug. 20. Raw’s official last day is Sept. 1 — he's been superintendent since 2006. Erdle’s appointment will also go into effect Sept. 1.
“We identified what we wanted — we wanted someone who knows the faculty and staff really well,” said Board of Education President Jeanie Grimm. “We wanted someone who loves the district, and felt devoted to it, and devoted to developing us further.”
Erdle was not present Thursday night — she was preparing for her daughter's wedding.
Grimm said it was too early to determine if Erdle will be a candidate to be Raw’s permanent replacement. She added that she doesn’t expect the replacement to be named until after the 2012-13 school year.
“We hope to appoint no earlier than July 1, 2013,” Grimm said. “You really want the best applicant pool you can get, and generally superintendents don’t want to leave their districts during the year.”
Erdle will be entering her 35th year with the district. She served as the Canandaigua Academy principal from 1998 to 2009, and was the district's executive principal for grades 6 to 12 for two years. She began her career in Canandaigua as a special education teacher in the junior high and high school. She was also an assistant principal at Canandaigua Academy before becoming its principal.
She holds a Bachelors degree in Special Education from SUNY Geneseo, a Masters in Special Education from Nazareth College, and her Administrative degree from SUNY Brockport.
“Sometimes an interim can be simply a ‘caretaker’ position. This is not one of those times,” Erdle said in a statement. “We have energetic new building administration teams at both the Primary School and the Academy. We have a dynamic faculty and staff champing at the bit to plunge into the new school year. I’ll be in the buildings every moment that it’s physically possible for me to do so, working with everyone to build trust and solve the inevitable problems that will occur. There’s too much on our plate for us to be able to sit still during this transition period. We owe our students, parents and whole community a total commitment to move forward strongly. That’s what we’ll do.”
The vote to appoint Erdle was unanimous, 8-0. School Board Vice President Beth Thomas was absent from the meeting.
Raw cited health issues and a recent death in the family as reasons for his resignation. Grimm did not comment on Raw’s resignation.
Raw was not present at the meeting.
