Long-time Victor resident and orthodontist Dr. Michael Spoon traveled to Portugal recently to lecture at the first orthodontic residency program in that country — the University of Lisbon School of Dentistry. That’s a long way from Maple Avenue where he’s been seeing patients since 1991. But when one of his former students from the Eastman Institute of Oral Health, Dr. Joana Godinho, extended the invitation, it was an offer he couldn’t refuse.

Spoon’s lectures included topics such as 3D imaging of the head, dispelling common orthodontics myths using recent scientific studies, and information about a study he supervised that dealt with how the airway shape can be a risk factor for sleep apnea.

“It was an honor and a pleasure to share my knowledge, research and experiences with orthodontists and students around the world,” said Spoon. “The residents were genuinely sincere about learning and they asked good questions.”

With an ongoing commitment to education at all levels, Spoon has been a long-time supporter of Dollars For Scholars and the Victor Free Library, and for 22 years has taught at the Eastman Institute of Oral Health (EIOH) at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

That’s where he met Godinho, who invited him to speak at the ULSD. Shortly after moving back to Portugal, she, along with two other Portugese orthodontists, helped start the first university-trained orthodontic residency department in their country.

According to Spoon,  there are only 60 university-trained orthodontists in all of Portugal so far, so the school meets a real need that will improve patient care.

“This trip was a delight both professionally and personally,” said Spoon. “Portugal is a friendly, wonderful country to visit. It has a rich history, proud citizens, and many World Heritage sites to visit.”

Spoon currently supervises several studies within the orthodontic department at EIOH, and is an officer in the prestigious Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists, and is also one of the featured speakers in next month’s EIOH reunion during the University of Rochester’s Meliora Weekend. His lecture will be on the best methods to measure facial growth and treatment changes.
