Medical officials have identified the female Brockport student found dead in her dorm room this weekend as 18-year-old Alexandra Kogut of New Hartford, New York.

According to a statement released by the Monroe County Sheriff's Department Sunday night, the cause of her death was blunt force trauma.

Kogut was found by Brockport University Police on Saturday, Sept. 29, around 2:45 a.m. in McLean Hall, a freshman dorm on campus.

Her boyfriend, Clayton Whittemore, 21, pled not guilty to murder in Sweden Town Court Saturday. According to deputies, he was picked up at a rest stop in the town of DeWitt.

The family of the victim released a statement on Sunday evening:

"Alexandra Kogut was a bright, beautiful young woman who was thrilled to be beginning her college education. Her lovely and sweet demeanor was truly infectious and she will forever be missed. Her family is very grateful for the tremendous outpouring of love and support that they have received from so many friends and neighbors. They ask that their privacy be respected during this time of grief."

A vigil for Kogut is planned at the college Monday evening.
