Willy Beamin is the 7-5 program choice for the 40th renewal of the $150,000 New York Derby at Finger Lakes Casino and Racetrack on Saturday. The bay gelding won the $125,000 Mike Lee Stakes in his most recent start at Belmont Park on June 24.

Willy Beamin drew away from his rivals to take the first jewel of the Big Apple Triple by four lengths. He has won four consecutive races by an average of over four and one-half lengths.

The Richard Dutrow, Jr.-trainee has a total of five victories in nine career starts and has amassed a sum of $219,545 in lifetime earnings. Jockey Michael Luzzi will be in the irons of the promising star for owner James Riccio. Luzzi won the one mile and one-sixteenth route in 2010 with Ibboyee.

Wildcat’s Smile will attempt to defeat male rivals for the second time and to become the first female horse to win the New York Derby. The classy filly owned by Francis Paolangeli took the $260,876 New York Breeders’ Futurity on October 1, 2011.

The $348,997 earner has the largest bankroll in the field of 3-year-old New York-breds. In her most recent start on June 23, she finished fourth in the Grade 1 Mother Goose at Belmont Park.

Leading Finger Lakes jockey John Davila, Jr. will be aboard the Dominic Galluscio-trainee. Davila won the rich event with Carr Tech in 1996 and Traffic Chief in 2003.

ARCTIC QUEEN HANDICAP

Eight rivals are entered for the 13th running of the $50,000 Arctic Queen Handicap. The fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up will travel a distance of six furlongs in the seventh race on Saturday’s card.

Lady On the Run is the 6-5 morning line favorite for the annual stake. She finished second in both of her starts in 2012 after concluding the 2011 season with a one and one-quarter length triumph in a $100,000 Staten Island Stakes at Aqueduct on November 13. The $245,850 earner trained by John Morrison will be ridden by Michael Luzzi. She has the top weight assignment of 123-pounds and will begin the sprint from post seven.

Beginning at 11:30 a.m, the first 1,500 members to check into Player Extras in the upper grandstand receive a free New York Derby T-Shirt. WYSL 1040 AM/92.1 FM will carry a live broadcast with pre and post race analysis of the New York Derby. First race post time is set at 1:10 p.m.
