A ceremony commemorating those who lost their lives on 9/11 was held at Mead Square Commons in Victor Tuesday night. Members of the Victor Fire Department attended the event and presented a commemorative wreath. Supervisor Jack Marren, Mayor John Holden, Fire Chief Phil Lavery and Chaplain Steve Lamarco were among those who spoke at the event.
For former Fire Department Chaplain Pat Haley, it was a chance to reflect on what he described as “the awesomeness of what those folks did.”
“I was looking at a book that we have over at the firehouse,” said Haley, “and it has a picture of a firefighter looking up at the burning buildings and it has his name on the back (of his jacket). (The book) says that he went in and never came out.
“I thought about other people — experienced firefighters, experienced EMTs, experienced police — looking at it and saying ‘I’m not going home tonight.’
“That moves me,” said Haley. “It really does. I don’t know whether I, in a similar situation, could summon that kind of courage. But they did — they did, God love them. And we’ve got to remember that.”
