Young Life students with an appetite for fun, and a knack for fundraising, joined forces on July 28 for a chicken and rib barbecue held roadside in front of Snuffy’s vegetable stand on Route 96 in Victor. The students, along with savory aromas from the grills, beckoned passing motorists and as a result, about 222 chicken dinners and 97 rib dinners were served and $529 was raised.

The purpose of the event was to offset the cost of four buses which transported about 200 area Young Life kids (20 from Victor) to and from Camp Timber Wolf in Michigan this July.

The Young Life organization has been hosting gatherings or “club” weekly for high school students in Victor for about a year and a half so far. Cheryl Erickson, one of the  group’s parent volunteers, affectionately described club as “a party with a purpose,” or “controlled chaos.”

“It’s a place where teens can be teens in a fun, safe environment, and hear the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” she said.

Students and leaders meet in homes throughout the school year, with about 45 kids participating.  And though Club only meets during the school year, this summer students have been getting together to play frisbee, and will be gathering for their next big event on Wednesday, August 10 at 9 p.m. at Auburn Creek Golf Range.
