Apparently, if you're looking to make some money for a worthy cause, having the Harlem Wizards come to town is the way to go.

In front of a standing-room only crowd — in fact, if you didn’t get to the Victor High School gymnasium early, chances are you were sent home as the gymnasium capacity was reached well before the start of the game — the Harlem Wizards defeated the Victor Vortex 97-92. It was an entertaining game with the Wizards leading for most of the night while the Vortex fought back to take the lead several times throughout the game.

“What a great night,” said Victor physical education teacher and Blue Devil head varsity baseball coach Sean Rucker. “It was a lot of fun to be out there playing with the Victor community members and fellow faculty members. The Wizards are amazing athletes with what they can do on a basketball court.”

It was Rucker however who made one of the games more valuable buckets, scoring a 20 point basket while being 15 points down on a shot that would have been just two points a few seconds later.

“It was good to see so many folks from the community come out and have a good time,” concluded Rucker.

But Rucker wasn’t the only hot hand for the Victor Vortex.

“Tim DiSanto was on fire,” pointed out Victor boys varsity head coach Frank Clark. “He knocked down quite a few shots, especially one that had to be at least from 25 feet. But the athleticism displayed by the Wizards, and how they got the crowd and everyone involved, was unbelievable. It was more fun to watch than it was to play.”

Victor varsity volleyball head coach Denise Dillman talked about how fun the event was for the kids.

“It was an awesome evening. It looked like the kids had a great time. The Wizards  were great at incorporating them into the program. They had the kids dancing and cheering and I think that was the whole goal.”

Also playing for the Vortex, a mixture of VCS teachers, administrators and Victor community members were; coach Ryan Charno along with Brian Siesto, Bryan Lischerelli, Kim Gallina, Andrea Tait, Kristin Munski, Dan Cromwell, Ed Samoel, Scott Summerson, Dave Clar, Cliff Hartford, Andrew Warner, Dyson Williamson, Meghan Dahlman, Jennifer Mauro, Chris Barnard, Steve Hendrickson, Scott Long, and Carl Christensen.

Playing for the Wizards, were players like Dwayne ‘Swoop’ Simpson, a Southern Connecticut State University graduate who has been with the Wizards since 2007, Lloyd ‘Loonatik’ Clinton, an Allen University graduate, and Arthur ‘King Arthur’ Lewis from Bowie State University.

The hundreds of fans present Monday night saw amazing basketball talent combined with hilarious comedy. The Wizards played with athleticism, tricks and fancy teamwork, including dozens of amazing dunks the likes of which folks present likely had never seen before. Comedy was the central theme with a half-time show for the kids plus post game interaction by the Wizards who stayed until every autograph was signed.

“This was for a great cause and it certainly looked like it went well,” concluded Victor high school assistant principal Brian Siesto. “The Victor Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) will benefit greatly from this sold-out event. It was great to be able to support the PTSA with such a popular event. I can’t wait for them to come back again.”
