Victor’s Tommy Wagner put on a memorable performance in what was likely his final football game against rival Canandaigua. The senior tailback ran for 275 yards on 32 carries and found the end zone a career-high six times.
The Braves’ offense couldn’t quite keep up with the Blue Devils’ scoring pace in the second half, as Victor held on to win 42-35 Friday at Corbit Field.
“The offensive line did a fantastic job,” Wagner said. “Pretty much all of those touchdowns I was running up the middle untouched. The line made it a lot easier for me to push through.”
Freshman quarterback Mike Wagner ran for 90 yards on 17 carries and quarterback Patrick Metzger completed 4 of 7 passes for 75 yards.
Canandaigua started the scoring when quarterback Austin Coyne completed a long drive with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Nate Bellis. The fullback broke a tackle on his way into the end zone. Bellis added the extra point.
Victor tied the game midway through the second quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by Tommy Wagner. Stephen Page added the extra point.
The Blue Devils turned the ball over deep in Braves’ territory on their next possession when a reverse handoff was fumbled and Canandaigua linebacker Sean Outhouse jumped on the football. Three plays later, the Braves’ Anthony Pagliano broke a tackle and ran 44 yards for a touchdown with 1:06 left in the half.
Victor moved downfield quickly on a pair of long passes by Metzger and Wagner found the end zone with 13 seconds left in the half to tie things up again.
After Canandaigua punted at the start of the third quarter, Victor marched down the field for another Wagner touchdown run up the middle from three yards out. The Blue Devils added to their lead when Wagner out-ran the Braves defense for a 39-yard touchdown down the right sideline with 2:18 left in the frame.
Having both Wagners in the backfield gave the Canandaigua defense trouble because of the misdirection. Mike Wagner could fake the handoff and keep the ball or give it to his older brother.
“You don’t know which one is getting the ball,” Victor coach Geoff Mandile said. “It’s an advantage. To have athletes like that, it’s not just the play calling, it’s having kids that can execute.”
Pagliano had trouble handling the ensuing kickoff, but used three quick spin moves to elude the coverage and ran 59 yards. Two plays later, Jaymin Ransom took a reverse out of the wildcat formation 60 yards for a touchdown.

Neither team could get a defensive stop in the fourth quarter. Wagner added his fifth touchdown for Victor from 21 yards out running right up the middle with 9:23 left in the game. Canandaigua answered right back with a five-yard touchdown pass from Coyne to Bellis.
The Braves’ onside kick failed, and that setup Wagner’s final touchdown from a yard out with 2:11 remaining. Coyne found Kirk Thomas open deep down the right sideline for a 60-yard touchdown with 1:02 left, but the onside kick was again recovered by Victor.
“There certainly wasn’t any quit in us,” Canandaigua coach Jeff Welch said. “There were times we got down a little bit and it was nice to see that we responded. Obviously their ground attack was pretty strong we had a difficult time stopping that all night.”
Coyne finished 8 of 13 for 109 yards. Pagliano ran eight times for 89 yards, Outhouse ran 19 times for 67 yards and Ransom ran two times for 64 yards.
Both teams are in action again next Friday when Victor (3-0) hosts Greece Olympia and Canandaigua (2-1) travels to Brockport.
