Three event highlights
1 - International expert Cindy Dyer, Vice-President for Human Rights at Vital Voices.org, will speak on the subject of "Human Trafficking At Home and Abroad." This program deals with a contemporary issue that relates to two historic themes important to the 1816 Farmington Quaker Meetinghouse Museum: women’s rights and antislavery.
2 - In her capacity as Vice President of Human Rights at Vital Voices, Dyer travels internationally speaking and directing conferences related to the health and rights of women. Vital Voices is a non-governmental organization that is committed to improving the lives of women worldwide. Dyer is particularly concerned with ending crimes against women, educating others of their victimization, and empowering women with the lifelong tools they need for success.
3 - This is the third in the summer lecture series of 2012 sponsored by The 1816 Farmington Quaker Meetinghouse Museum, co-sponsored by the Peace and Social Services Committee of the Farmington Friends Meeting, the Sisters of St. Joseph, and the Sisters of Mercy Justice Group.
Why you should attend
Trafficking, the modern enslavement of men, women and children, and its impact on its victims, particularly women, will be the focus of Dyer’s lecture. Every year, thousands of men, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers. This problem is one of global magnitude, is cross-cultural and also hidden in the fabric of American society. The FBI states that "here in this country, people are being bought, sold, and smuggled like modern-day slaves." It is widely described as one of the fastest growing criminal industries in the world. Learn more about trafficking predators and the vulnerable people victimized.
