Under normal circumstances the athletic field at Victor High School is packed with athletes and cheering fans. On Friday, July 13, it was packed with warriors.
Relay For Life of Victor was more than a night of fun, it was a stand of solidarity against cancer as 257 participants on 25 teams helped raise money and awareness to support the American Cancer Society's lifesaving mission.
Teams camped out at Victor Central Schools and took turns walking or running around the track. And because cancer never sleeps, each team was asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event.
First Vice President of the Farmington-Victor Kiwanis Club, Barb Years, organized a team of volunteers who over the past year raised $5,526 — so far.
Other top teams were Christy’s Crew, which raised $4,587, and Rock for the Cure, which raised $4,401.
“An exciting piece about Relay,” said event organizer Dawn Knapp, “is that several of our teams this year (were) comprised completely of young people and students.”
To keep things moving all night long, participants held theme laps, including a western lap, decade lap, Disney character, silly hat lap, bubble blowing lap, red, white, and blue lap, glow in the dark lap, toga lap and finally a fight back lap.
A luminaria ceremony and silent lap was also a poignant highlight of the night, as hundreds of candle-lit bags lined the track.
