One hundred-seventy diehard off-road cyclists can’t be wrong: Victor’s 7th annual Fat Tire Mountain Bike Festival was the place to be last Saturday, July 21. Children, youth and adults competed at Dryer Road Park in five categories. The youngest, Colin Norton, was just 5 years old. At the other end of the spectrum, and with no less enthusiasm, was 68-year-old Tom Spence.

Why is the yearly festival so popular?

“(It’s) the diversity of the trail network at Dryer Road Park,” said Brian Emelson, Victor Parks and Recreation director, “and the first class manner in the way they are treated by our event committee.”

The festival, sponsored by Genesee Regional Off-Road Cyclists, featured a cross-country, mass mountain bike race for youth, beginner, sport and expert classes. Other activities included a kids' mountain bike race, music, food, demonstrations, and raffles. Several area bike shops were also on hand with the latest bikes and equipment.

“Park Avenue Bike Shop and the Hardcore 24 event donated a mountain bike,” said Emelson, “and Stan's NoTubes donated bike rims which were used by GROC to raffle off to support their trail maintenance efforts.”

Event sponsors included  VanBortel Motorcars, Stan's NoTubes, Cloud Doxc, Amiel’s Submarines, Towpath Bike, Park Avenue Bike Shop, Bert's Bikes and Fitness, Full Moon Vista Bike & Sport, Mac 5 Bikes, Rochester Fitness Equipment, Geneva Bicycle Center, and Tryon Bike.

“This year we are donating 25 percent of the proceeds to the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester,” said Emelson. “We also had a very successful pre-event (and) packet pick-up at the Thirsty Turtle Sports Bar and Grill on Friday night.”

For more information on the Fat Tire Festival, organized by Mary Lee, Jon Brown, Scott Likely, Steve Ricketts, Fritz Seager, Victor Gaspar, Brian Emelson, Rob Mihayli and  GROC, visit www.mygroc.com.
