The Town of Victor was established on May 26, 1812 by an act of the New York State Legislature. Victor had, up until that time, been a part of the Town of Bloomfield. The new township was formally called “Victor” after a founding member of the Boughton family, Claudius Victor Boughton, who was a hero of the War of 1812.

Victor will begin its celebration of its 200th birthday in May 2012 with an historical program by Town Historian, Babette Huber on the beginnings of the Town of Victor.

The birthday party will last over a span of two  calendar years though. Why? Victor officially became a town in 1812, but it did not have its first Town Board meeting until April 1813.

The Historic Advisory Committee is the core planning group for the Bicentennial. That committee is made up of Sid Burton, Clint Emery, Michael Houser, Muriel Nado, Joe Pow (Chairman), Jason Shelton and Sue Stehling. The advisor to the committee is Babette Huber, Town Historian, and the Town Board liaison is John Palomaki.

The Committee has drafted a preliminary plan of activities for the year long bicentennial. We are encouraging all community groups to become involved. If your community group is interested in a specific event, please contact the committee members who  are in charge of the event or e-mail victorbicentennial@gmail.com.

There are many ways for everyone to become involved in our community’s history. Let’s make this celebration  not only a time to reflect on our Town’s history, but an opportunity for the community to share its time and talents.
