Pajama-clad moms, dads and grades K-6 children gathered in the Victor primary school auditorium last week to unplug from distractions and reconnect with each other at Camp Read-A-Lot.
Kids and adults relaxed among heaps of pillows, blankets and sleeping bags and savored s’mores as a steady hum of fiddle music and stories being read aloud filled the room.
At the event, each child received a free book, courtesy of the Victor Parent Teacher Student Association.
Here, primary school librarian Michele Linse shares a few tips and her top picks for families looking to take their reading to the next level.
Why read aloud?
When books are read aloud to them, children comprehend at a higher level than when they read to themselves, according to Victor Primary librarian Michele Linse. “It’s important for families to keep reading together — even after those lap years,” she said. “Reading aloud to children offers an enormous source of vocabulary, background knowledge, fluency modeling, and general support of the reading process. In particular, you want to show a delight and interest about stories and the world to encourage your child’s own quest.”
