Emily Hawk is 17 years old and in the 12th grade. She lives with her mom and  dad, Julie and Chris Hawk and her 15-year-old brother Danny.

What activity have you tackled that has been the most challenging and rewarding?

My most rewarding activity I've been involved in was the Victor Marching Blue Devils, and by extension, the Victor Indoor Percussion Ensemble. I joined field band in seventh grade as a member of the flute section and the indoor percussion group in eighth grade as a member of the cymbal line.

How did you get involved with that project?

I got involved with the field band in sixth grade. I had joined the Cadet Guard, which is a program related to the field band. The instructors there suggested I join the field band. I switched from being a member of the guard (which performs with flags and rifles and sabers) to playing the flute and became completely engrossed in the program. The next year, at the end of the field band season, I heard that the Indoor Percussion Ensemble was adding a cymbal line. My best friend and I decided to try out and I've been involved with the indoor group ever since.

What makes it rewarding?

The reward that I get out of field band is hard to describe. I've met my best friends (there) and I've had the best memories. I find it amazing that a group of over 100 people can be so dedicated to the goal of having our best possible performance. Field band is all about teamwork and effort and I've certainly learned about that. I was band captain for two years and drum major for one, so I also experienced having to be a leader in the band. That was an amazing reward in itself and I'm so glad I got be a leader in the band. The indoor group is rewarding in a different way. The group itself is smaller — about 30 people. That allows us to add so much detail into our show. I love performing the most intricate of shows. Being part of the cymbal line led me to become even closer with my friends, and I would not give up a minute of being in the indoor group.

Who has most inspired you to be the person you are today?

I don't think just one person has inspired me to be who I am today. My parents are the biggest inspirations, because they have taught me so much — things like never giving up and being able to drive well I learned from
them. All of my teachers through Victor Junior High and High School have also inspired me in some way. The music department, especially, has helped me reach who I am today. My instructors in field band and the
indoor group have also inspired me in many ways, both large and small.

How do you balance all your time commitments?

I plan. That's the secret to balancing everything, I've discovered. I use the calendar in my cell phone to keep track of everything I have going on, whether it's tests or work or practice or family get togethers. I also do my homework as soon as I get home, usually. Putting that off is the easiest way to lose the balance of all the commitments I have. Plus, having a few years of practice in balancing everything makes it easy to keep up.

If you could choose any career in the world, what would you be?

If I could have any career in the world, I'd chose to be a history teacher. I love history and I've always wanted to show students just how amazing history can be.

What’s on your iPod?

Pretty much everything! I love music, I listen to all kinds. I have a lot of alternative rock music and a lot of ska music. But I also have classic rock, country, and even pop music. My favorite bands are almost all from England. I love British music so much. My favorite singer, though, is Taylor Swift. She's just an amazing person and I love her music.

What do you do for fun?

I usually just hang out with my friends. We stay at our houses, or go to the mall. In the summer I go to my family's cottage on Keuka Lake a lot. I've spent every summer on Keuka, and I love to go jet skiing and wake boarding. In the winter I occasionally skiing on Bristol Mountain, but I mainly just spend time with my friends.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I'd love to tour Europe; see London and Paris and Vienna and Rome. I'd also love to go to Greece, or even somewhere on the Mediterranean. The Caribbean has always been on my list of places to visit, along with Australia. Really, I'd just love to go anywhere interesting.

What’s your favorite food?

I don't eat a wide variety of food, but I would have to say that I absolutely love my mom's homemade chocolate chip ice cream. Something about it just makes it ten times better then store bought ice cream, and it just absolutely delicious.

What's your best advice for other students your age?

Don't stress out too much. So many kids I know stress out about college and school. That's all they ever worry about and all they ever focus on. It's good to make these things a priority, but I firmly believe that everyone needs to have fun as well. I make sure that I spend time every week just relaxing or doing something I enjoy and I'd encourage everyone my age to do the same thing.
