Meet Class Act: Harrison Hartsough
Grade: Junior
Age: 16

What activity or project have you tackled that has been the most challenging and rewarding?
In terms of both challenging and rewarding I would have to say teaching cello lessons.

How did you get involved with that project?
I got involved through my orchestra teacher, Tim Nowak, offering me the opportunity to teach a younger student. It springboarded from there to my private cello teacher also referring a student to me. Now I have a couple of students and maybe some more starting this summer.

What makes it rewarding?
Seeing the students make progress as well as seeing myself make progress through helping them. It’s not easy, by any means, but the whole experience makes itself worth it.

Who has most inspired you to be the person you are today?
A lot of my own ambition has inspired me, but my parents especially encourage me to challenge myself to work harder and do better.

How do you balance all your time commitments?
It can be overwhelming. My academics, sports, and especially music keep me busy. Sometimes I have to make priorities with what I do. What always helps is not procrastinating, meaning that I start assignments early. This and hard work mean I can manage my commitments.

What do you could choose any career in the world, what would you be?
Music composition or politics. I have always wanted to see how rewarding it could be if I were to write a piece and then hear it played. I am also very interested in history and political science and how government decisions impact society.

What’s on your iPod?
The majority of my iPod is classic rock and classical music.  I have a lot of Clapton, Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Saint-Saens, Haydn and Elgar.

What do you do for fun?
I love just being with friends.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?
New Zealand. I’ve seen some movies that were filmed there, and some pictures, and it looks like an amazing place.

What’s your favorite food?
My favorite food would have to be any sort of pie.

What’s your best advice for other students your age?
Challenge yourself and develop ambition about something you love to do, then combine that drive with hard work.
