Micayla Menchel is 14 years old and in ninth grade. She lives with her mom, Heather, her dad, Joel, and 16 year-old brother Sam.
What activity or project have you tackled that has been the most challenging and rewarding?
The most challenging activity that I’ve taken on was leasing a horse named Pete. The first time I rode him I fell off and was still crazy enough to lease him.
How did you get involved with that project?
I’ve been riding for about six years now and Pete was there for me at the right time and place.
What makes it rewarding?
Pete really taught me to be patient and forgiving and helped me to be the rider I am today. I probably have never gotten to have a more special horse.
Who has most inspired you to be the person you are today?
There are multiple people who inspire me. Some of them are my parents, my brother, some of my teachers, and many people who I’ve met through riding.
How do you balance all your time commitments?
Usually I try to get though the work I need to so I don’t have to worry about it when I go to the barn or tennis.
If you could choose any career in the world, what would you be?
I think it would be a lot of fun to have my own barn and teach and train horses for a career.
What’s on your iPod?
I like classical music that has a current twist on it. I also like artists like Lady Gaga and Paramore.
What do you do for fun?
I love to horseback ride and play with my dog Polo.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?
I would love to go to England during college and spend a semester there.
What’s your favorite food?
Any Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream but especially Chunky Monkey.
What's your best advice for other students your age?
Get through the things you have to so you can enjoy the things you want to.
