With the holiday shopping season gearing up, one Rochester company is taking the initiative to encourage consumers to “shop local” this year. Go Buy Rochester’s “Shop Local for the Holidays” campaign aims to both inform consumers about the benefits of shopping locally owned, independent businesses, as well as give them direct access to products from those businesses.
“It really is a two-pronged approach,” says David Madison, President of equaTEK Interactive and Go Buy Rochester. “People need to understand how simply choosing to shop locally-owned businesses can fundamentally change our economy for the better. This makes consumer education a major part of the campaign.” To that end, GoBuyRochester.com is featuring articles and blog posts that speak to the impact of shopping local, stressing the 3x multiplier on dollars spent with a locally owned, independent business vs. a “big box” store. “Beyond the basics of what shopping local can do for our economy, though, many shoppers simply do not realize how many products are available to them through locally owned businesses,” continues Madison. “That’s the second part of what we’re doing with this campaign: showing shoppers the variety of choices available to them and connecting them to these local businesses.”
A special web page has been setup at gobuyrochester.com/holidays, featuring gift ideas sold by locally owned companies through Go Buy Rochester, enabling local consumers to shop local 24/7 from the comfort of their own home. The
web page also includes links to content that talks about the impact of shopping local. “Once people realize that patronizing locally owned businesses leads to more local jobs and better funded schools and local government, I think they’ll gladly make the switch,” says Madison. “And what better time to start shopping local than this time of year, when consumer spending is at its highest? What an incredible gift for our community!”
