One of the great things about going to the same place many times over period of several months is that you sometimes get to observe the young ones growing up. Most ducks have a very short span of time to get strong, feather out, learn to fly and learn to find food for themselves. These Merganser babies hatched in early June and by late September were almost full-grown and hunting for themselves. In the final two photos you can see that the Merganser has learned to scan underwater for fish. Later in the day I watched as he spotted, chased-down and caught a small perch. At least this one has learned how to provide for himself.
